Èȵ㱬ÁÏÈë¿Ú names new Dean of Online Learning

Michael H. Murphy, from Prineville, Oregon, has been named Èȵ㱬ÁÏÈë¿Ú’s Dean of Online Learning. He comes to Bristol after working as the Director of eLearning and Academic Technology at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) in Bend, Oregon.

Michael is a passionate advocate for the advancement of innovative online education; and has presented at numerous national, regional, state and international conferences on instructional technology. He begins his new role at Bristol on June 1, 2020.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisburg, VA.; his Master of Arts in educational computing; Specialist in Education (Ed.S.) in curriculum and institution and his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), with a minor in educational technology, from Marshall University in South Charleston, W.V.

Michael was named Central Oregon Community College’s Director of eLearning and Academic Technology in 2017 and has provided leadership and innovation for online education at all COCC locations. During this time, he directed online education curriculum and training, collaborated with COCC faculty in all departments to build effective teaching strategies and developed relationships, outside of the college community, to provide the analytical support for best practices and accreditation standards for online/hybrid courseware.

Previously he served as the Coordinator for the Master’s in Teaching and Learning program, as well as an Associate Professor of Education, at Lander University, in Greenwood, S.C. In these roles, he developed and maintained all online courses for the Master's in Teaching and Learning programs and taught the university’s instructional technology courses. During this time Michael also completed a Fulbright research in instructional technologies in Thailand.  

Throughout his professional career, Michael has also gained valuable experience in the areas of program development, grant funding, assessment and accreditation work. He completed the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) Evaluator Training Workshop in 2018 and has participated on a college review team. He also has served on several committees in his recent position at COCC, including the eLearning & academic technology committee, technology advisory committee, instructional administrators committee, online orientation committee and the learning management review task force.
