The Civic Engagement program seeks to promote a culture of social responsibility and community-engaged learning. To that end, the Civic Engagement program includes Academic Community-Based Learning, Community Service Leadership, Volunteer Service Awards, and Voting initiatives.

Students

Our mission is to enhance your educational experience by engaging you in hands-on learning through Community-Based Learning courses while getting you involved with and helping your local community. Giving back to the community is not just a social service; it is a learning experience and a valuable part of connecting to your college education.

  • Increase understanding of class topics through Community-Engaged Learning.
  • Learn more about social issues and their root causes.
  • Develop personal and professional skills, especially in the areas of communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership.
  • Expand understanding of diverse cultures and communities.

The Civic Engagement program values all service to the community and wants to recognize you for all that you do in making positive social change. The three Civic Engagement awards are:

  • Bristol President's Volunteer Service Award for Individuals
  • Bristol President's Volunteer Service Award for Student Groups
  • Newman Civic Fellowship

Bristol President's Volunteer Service Award

Students can apply for the Bristol President鈥檚 Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes both individual service as well as service performed by student clubs and organizations. To find out more about eligibility criteria and to apply, please visit:

  • A Leadership Project designed to meet a community need. Students must lead a group of at least 3 of their peers in this project.
  • 4 or more Community-Based Learning courses during their time at the College.

Newman Civic Fellowship

The Newman Civic Fellowship is intended to honor the legacy of Campus Compact Founder Frank Newman by recognizing community-committed students who:

  • Engage in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change.
  • Take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization.
  • Demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement.

Purpose of the Award

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact provides students with opportunities to nurture their assets and help them develop strategies for social change鈥攃reating a network of connected and engaged student leaders who can support one another in making positive change.

Eligibility for the Award

Student nominees must:

  • Be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program (preference for undergraduate students).
  • Have at least one year of their education remaining at the date of nomination so that they are enrolled as a student for the full duration of their fellowship (Sept thru May of next academic year).
  • Commit to providing a short reflection piece to the Leduc Center and Campus Compact during their fellowship year.
  • Commit to being present and fully engage in offered fellowship activities.
  • No individual may receive more than one Newman Fellowship whether internal or external from another agency.

Program Components

Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact provides Newman Civic Fellows with opportunities for learning and networking virtually and in person. Each opportunity is designed to help students learn to collaborate effectively across disciplines and to apply their skills to directly create positive change in their communities.
